Today is January 7th, 2016.
Does anyone know what holiday Jan. 7th is?
Today is “Old Rock Day”
“Old Rock Day” doesn’t refer to rock and roll music or us old rock and rollers (although a day celebrating that would also be great).
Today is the day that geologists and rock enthusiasts designated for everyone to show their appreciation and enjoyment for rocks and fossils. How cool is that ?
No one is really sure of the origin of this ROCKY holiday. Not even us fossils.
Maybe it originated on a Flintstones episode. Unfortunately, Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty aren’t available for confirmation.
Maybe its name and January birthday coincides with our “solid as a rock” Capricorns.
So, what can we rock hounds do to celebrate this special day?
Those who are new to rocks may choose to start a rock collection.
Seasoned rock enthusiasts, why not add a rock to your collection.
Dust off those tucked away darlings and play with them.
Select a rock to be your “pet rock” and bond with it. “Pet rocks” live forever.
Create a rock garden
Paint or decorate a rock
Gather small rocks / pebbles and wire wrap them
Go on a field trip in search of rocks and fossils
Place rocks on an old (human) fossil for some healing.
Take some rocks to the beach and give them a dip in the salty ocean.
Feel free to come up with your own ideas.
Happy Rock Day, Everyone!
