Aventurine is a mineral made up of quartz and / or feldspar. It is considered microcrystalline because its structure is made up of very minute crystals. Aventurine is identifiable by it’s sparkling and glittering inclusions of mica (silver) and /or hematite (red or gray). This green stone stimulates and protects the heart chakra, helps us make decisions and gives leadership abilities. It is also believed to attract wealth.
Over the years, aventurine was a popular stone for making carvings, jewelry, beads, figurines and eggs. The reason for this was because of its relatively high hardness, lovely green sparkly color and the fact that it takes on a smooth silky finish when polished. Remember the famous Faberge eggs? In the late 1800s aventurine as well as jasper, lapis lazuli, quartz, jade and sapphire were all used in those famous eggs.
The name “aventurine” comes from the Italian expression “a ventura”, which refers to a glass that had iridescent sparkles and was discovered around 1700. Aventurine also glitters and gets its sparkles from inclusions of mica and / or hematite. Sometimes the easiest way to determine aventurine from jade or other green stones is by looking for the sparkles. By the way, darker aventurine pieces tend to have more mica in them.
Aventurine is most commonly associated with the color green, however, it can also be blue or reddish brown. Green aventurine gets its coloring from particles of fuschite. Blue Aventurine is a result of copper silicates and red aventurine is caused by hematite.
Green Aventurine provides optimism and a zest for life. It helps us deal with challenging issues such as aging, illness and our own eventual demise.
