Carnelian (aka Sard) is a variety of chalcedony (a quartz). The word Carnelian comes from the Latin word “caro” or “carnis” which means “flesh” so named for its coloring. The orange coloring and stripes, specs and bands are caused by iron oxide impurities. Carnelian combats jealousy, envy, fear, rage, sorrow and sluggishness. It encourages perception, decision making, acceptance, vitality, courage and motivation. Put these in your pocket or bra and let these little gems go to work for you.
Interesting Tidbits: Carnelian is the most common cryptocrystalline quartz. Cryptocrystalline quartz is quartz that has microscopic sized crystals. Other cryptocrystalline quartz are agate, aventurine, bloodstone, chalcedony and chrysocolla quartz. These crystals come in a vast array of colors and patterns. The stripes, specs and bands on these crystals are caused by iron impurities.
