Dumortierite

Hardness: 7

Many people refer to this bright stone as blue quartz, however dumortierite isn’t a quartz per se.  Like other quartzes, dumortierite contains silicon and oxygen.  However, it also contains aluminum and boron, two elements which are not typically found in quartz crystals.

Dumortierite is great to have around as it bestows patience, discourages excitable behavior, helps eliminate stubborness and increases will power and self discipline. It encourages us to stand up for ourselves.  Since Dumortierite can open up our insight, it is a great stone for intuition and channeling work. Dumortierite  helps us become better organized and precise.  This stone is named after the French paleontologist, Eugene Dumortier (1803-1873) who first discovered it in the French Alps.

Interesting Tidbits: Dumortierite isn’t always blue. The presence of more iron (than aluminum) can give dumortierite a range of colors including blue,  green, brown, pink and violet.  It’s appearance is sometimes mistaken for sodalite, a blue stone that has white calcite veins.
