Emerald

Hardness: 7.5 – 8

Most people expect to see emeralds cut and polished and hanging around a finger or an earlobe, however, they are pretty cool in their natural form.

Emerald, the birthstone of May, is actually green Beryl. ** The green is a result of tiny amounts of chromium, iron and sometimes vanadium.

Known as the “stone of the heart” and “inspiration stone,” emeralds bring love, harmony, rejuvenation and recovery.  This precious gem provides bliss, sensitivity, loyalty, perception, inspiration and patience.  “All this and I attract wealth too.”

Emeralds open up and stimulate the heart chakra.  They are a natural for meditations, dream work, spirituality and consciousness as they can provide clairvoyance and psychic abilities.

Interesting Tidbits:  When an Emerald changes color, it may indicate “unfaithfulness”.

Emeralds have some interesting connections to the month of May. Some ancient myths believed that Emeralds were connected to the planet Mercury. Mercury is the ruling planet of Gemini and many Geminis have birthdays in May.  Equally interesting is that this May stone is known for bestowing abundant patience.   Taurus people (many who are born in May) are known for their patience.
