Herkimers, AKA herkimer diamonds are small, usually short and fat double terminated quartz formations with 18 facets.
Herkimer “Diamonds”can be clear, cloudy or smokey depending on the inclusions in them. They got the name herkimer diamonds because they have a brilliance, they are naturally faceted (like diamonds) and they were originally found in Herkimer County in upstate N.Y.
Herkimer diamonds are believed to have begun growing around 500,000,000 years ago. (Yes, that is 500 million years ago).
Herkimers were first discovered in the late 1700s growing very slowly inside vugs (small cavities) of large pieces of dolomite rock. Dolomite is a combination of limestone, calcite bedrock and magnesium.
