Howlite is named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist, geologist and mineralogist who first discovered it in 1868 near Windsor, Nova Scotia. This mineral was originally found growing in a gypsum quarry and was actually considered to be a nuisance by miners.  Today, howlite is often found growing in deposits containing other borate or evaporate* minerals.  (* A simplified definition of evaporate minerals are water soluble sedimentary rocks which form when the minerals dissolve in water and dry up).

This calcium borosilicate hydroxide of calcium, boron, silicon, oxygen and hydrogen most commonly forms as irregular silky nodules (resembling heads of cauliflower) with irregular cleavage.  The more rare howlite crystals have only been found in Tick Canyon, California and Iona, Nova Scotia. The crystals at Iona can be transparent clear or a translucent white or brown.

In its natural state, most howlite is a white to whitish gray, usually opaque, stone with fine black or gray veining / web-like markings.

Howlite is soft and porous and has a porcelain like luster which is ideal for dyeing.  Because of this, there is a lot of dyed howlite (especially blue, green and red) out there which resembles other stones.  Blue howlite is often passed off as turquoise or turquenite and red howlite can sometimes be mistaken for red coral.

Sometimes natural howlite is sold and marketed under the misleading names “white turquoise,” “white buffalo turquoise” or “white buffalo stone.”

Howlite is one of the most calming stones of the mineral kingdom.  It’s no wonder that this “relaxing” stone is for the “not always so calm” Geminis.  This “Gemini stone” soothes our nerves and emotions, quiets our mind and encourages calm communication.  It bestows us with good reasoning ability, keen observation and abundant patience.
