Jade

Hardness:  6.5 – 7

Jade is a metamorphic rock (when an exisiting rock changes in form) that is often marketed as other stones. Most gemologists recognize two classifications of jade:  nephrite and jadeite. Melody, author of “Love Is In the Earth,” adds  transvaal jade.  Nephrite is the most common jade, often containing tremolite and / or actinolite.  Jadeite is often translucent jade.

Jade comes from the Spanish words “piedra de yjada”(coined in 1565) which means “stone of the loin”, because it was believed to be effective in healing loin and kidney ailments.  Nephros (of which nephrite is a derivative) is Greek for kidney.

This “Dream Stone” improves our health in many ways.  It benefits our glandular functions, stimulates and detoxifies our kidneys and helps lower our fevers.

Jade calms our emotions and provides serenity, tranquility, calmness and wisdom.  It discourages prejudice and bestows contentment.  Jade is associated with abundance, wealth, longevity, luck and good health. Also good for recalling past lives.

Place Jade under your pillow and release suppressed emotions while dreaming.

Interesting Tidbits:  Jade is the official stone of Wyoming, Alaska and British Columbia. Outside the Anchorage visitors center in Alaska sits a 2 ton block of Jade which was donated to the city. Jade is tougher than steel, yet soft enough to be carved.
