Hardness:  varies  between 2 – 5.5

Although it is called serpentine jade, it is actually serpentine that resembles jade.  One reason for this similarity in appearance is because two minerals (magnesium and iron) that are in serpentine can also be found in nephrite jade.  Serpentine is primarily a magnesium,  iron and silicate mineral.
