Sodalite is a sodium, aluminum chloride silicate. Originally discovered in Greenland in 1811, sodalite became more popular after being found in Ontario, Canada in 1891. Sodalite got its name from its high content of sodium.
Sodalite is most commonly royal blue with veins or patches of white calcite, however it can also be gray, green, pink or yellow. Sometimes folks have difficulty telling the difference between sodalite and lapis lazuli. The main distinction between sodalite and lapis is that lapis lazuli has gold flecks and sodalite does not. The gold coloring on the lapis is a result of pyrite growing with lapis.
